About the Movie
Hillbilly Elegy is a 2020 American biographical drama film directed by Ron Howard and written by Vanessa Taylor, based on the 2016 memoir of the same name by J. D. Vance.
The film stars Amy Adams, Glenn Close, Gabriel Basso, Haley Bennett, Freida Pinto, and Owen Asztalos. It follows Vance, a former Marine and Yale Law School graduate, who returns to his hometown in Middletown, Ohio, to care for his drug-addicted mother.
Netflix Acquisition and Distribution
Netflix acquired the film's distribution rights in January 2019, before it started filming. Hillbilly Elegy had a limited theatrical release in November 2020 before moving exclusively to Netflix.
Netflix reportedly spent $45 million to finance the movie. After its release on Netflix, viewership increased by 1,179% compared to the day before Vance's vice presidential bid announcement.
